Exclusive Interview: Billy Cocks (Hotbed)

We speak to Abode Hotbed resident Billy Cocks about his journey into DJ’ing, his love for different genres of music and the upcoming season in Ibiza.

How did you get into DJ’ing?

My little sister taught me, she was just getting about the scene and I just used to watch her and think that is unreal I want to do that. So she taught me the basics and then like all things, practice makes perfect! Growing up I have always loved music, my mum and dad always had music on, my dad was more Hip-hop and Jazz where my mum was House and Mo-town. So I’m sort of a mixture between the two.

You are best known for being one of the residents of Abode’s sister party HotBed, how did you get involved with that?

Well as you probably know my sister is a resident at Abode so due to that I was always at all the parties and got close with all the Abode family, got booked to play at Abode a couple of times and then they started HotBed and my sound was what they were looking for so it was only right for me to become a resident along with Danny Langan, Parris & Lloyd and percussionist Jamie Walker and saxophonist Josh Arise, both unreal musicians and so yeah; together we make Hotbed.

Last year you held a Hotbed residency over in Ibiza at Ocean Beach Club, what was that experience like?

It was unreal! I have been to Ibiza so many times before and to now hold a residency out there is something else, everything happened so fast like I only started mixing because I love music and just thought it would be sick to do it and then the residency at HotBed just gave me the platform to shine. what more could you want? Sun, sea and tunes.

You recently held your Hotbed brunch series 002 party this past weekend, how did it go down?

Well if you haven’t been to the brunch series yet, you really need to get yourself down there! The vibe is crazy, the food is banging and the music is spot on! It’s at Mcqueens in Shoreditch, the crowd I’d say is a bit older as its 21 and over in there but if you like your music with soul you will definitely love this party!

You also play for another soul & funky House night called Jack Your Body London, what’s it like playing for them?

Jack your body a wicked party, great venue; great vibes every time and a slightly older crowd. Always love playing for them and pleased to say I’ll be joining them out in Ibiza for not 1 but 2 of their parties one being at the beach star hotel and the other alongside the party ‘what the funk’ at Es Paradis.

Abode & Do Not Sleep have also announced a summer residency at Amnesia this summer in which your sister, Ellie Cocks is a resident at, what’s it like growing up with a sibling who is also into the same music as you?

Yeah I have seen Abode just grow and grow followed them all over and they just keep getting bigger and bigger and for this year to announce Amnesia was just setting levels! So proud of the Abode team and what they have achieved and obviously super proud of Ellie my little sister! Although we are into the same music we don’t play the same, she plays the more tech stuff whereas I play more soulful but we have done a couple of b2b’s and there is no better feeling than playing music with your sister, my mum also used to basically come to every one of our gigs to support us, so we have had some special moments together. Unfortunately my mum passed away in December and it’s been really hard for myself and Ellie but if anything keeps us going it’s the music.

For DJs/producers that are just starting out in the scene, what advice would you be giving them and why?

Just to do you really, don’t conform and know your worth.

What music do you listen to when you aren’t playing gigs? and what artists do you like in the House scene and other scenes?

Hip-hop, I listen to Hip-hop every day; like I love it to be honest. I don’t really listen to House a lot because most of the time I have Hip-hop on, I love all types of music though but yeah just mostly Hip-hop. At the moment, I’m listening to a lot of a boogie wit da hoodie, 6ix9ine, and Dave East but my all-time favourites are the likes of 2pac, Eminem etc. In the house scene my favourite DJs are Ellie Cocks, Masters at Work, DJ Spen and The Martinez Brothers. I just love music I think it is the best thing in the world!

What else can we expect from you in the future?

Ermm…well as you know I have my summer residency out in Ibiza at ocean beach every Wednesday, and that’s from June 6th till September 26th. as well as gigs in the UK including couple festivals and couple sick parties as well as HotBed in the UK…just keep an eye on my socials to find out more!
